The General Post Office (GPO) was another pub in Berlin Steglitz on our to-do list. The GPO is within walking distance of the Rathaus Steglitz S-Bahn station or the Schloßstraße underground station.
We visited the pub late on a Friday evening and found it to be moderately busy. There was still plenty of space, so we sat down at one of the large round tables where many other visitors were playing cards.

Ambience
The General Post Office is certainly not a typical Irish pub. That’s because one theme takes centre stage here: the post office.
The GPO is furnished with numerous antiques that come from or are reminiscent of old post offices or postal stations. Certainly not typical Irish pub décor, but at least something we haven’t seen before.
The entire interior of the GPO is a smoke-free zone. Outside, there is a terrace for warmer days or for those who wish to enjoy a cigarette.
The General Post Office consists of two rooms. In the first room, you will find the bar and smaller tables as well as barrels to sit on.
The second room has several large tables that can accommodate larger groups.
Although the colour combination of white walls and green ceilings gives the overall impression of elegance, the General Post Office is very bright and therefore less cosy.
The merchandise from brands such as Guinness, Jameson and Heineken on the walls also seems rather out of place among the postal antiques and appears almost too modern for the otherwise rustic pub.

However, what was most lacking at the General Post Office was atmosphere. It was extremely quiet for a Friday evening. Of course, it may be different on evenings when, for example, the pub quiz takes place (yes, they have a pub quiz here too!), live music is played or sports are broadcast.
The pub quiz at the GPO takes place every second Sunday and has some very interesting themes, including ‘Eeny, meeny, miny, moe’ and ‘I came, I saw, I quizzed’. You certainly can’t accuse the quizmaster of lacking creativity. If you want to take part, it’s best to register at the pub in advance. For just €1 per person, you can then compete in the quiz.
Friendliness
As soon as we sat down at the table, we were handed the menu and within a few minutes we had our first Guinness in front of us. The service is fast and friendly. Questions and requests were also dealt with as best as possible.
Drinks
If you’re looking for a delicious Guinness in Steglitz, you’ll definitely find it at the General Post Office. For €6.20 per pint, you’ll be served a cool stout. The GPO also offers other classics, such as our beloved Newcastle Brown Ale or Hop House. All draught beers are also available in pitchers here.

If you want to laugh until you cry, you should take a closer look at the menu. When we first read it, we immediately noticed the interesting spelling of some of the menu items. For example, there is ‘Guiness’ instead of “Guinness” or ‘Hope House’ instead of ‘Hop House’. However, our favourite was the ‘Rotläppchen’ sparkling wine.
In addition to beer, the General Post Office also offers a selection of Irish and Scottish whiskies and other spirits.
Our tip: if you fancy a Baby Guinness, you won’t find it on the menu. But since they have Kahlua and Baileys, you can still order it and they will take great care in preparing your shot.
Food / Snacks
Unfortunately, when we arrived late on Friday evening, the kitchen was already closed. So we didn’t get to enjoy the General Post Office menu. A blackboard in the front room listed the sandwiches that are otherwise available here. Maybe we’ll have better luck with the kitchen on our next visit.
