The Irish Pub in the Europa-Center is certainly one of the best-known Irish pubs in Berlin. Its location right next to Kurfürstendamm and the Zoological Garden is particularly attractive for tourists. Nico was a frequent visitor to this pub even before he lived in Berlin. And for Christiane, too, this was the first Irish pub she visited after moving to Berlin.
Once you’ve found the Irish Pub in the Europa-Center (a somewhat outdated shopping center) … you know … down the escalator and then you’re almost in Ireland … it immediately catches your eye. Even from the outside, the Irish Pub in the Europa-Center looks very appealing and typically Irish.
We visited the Irish pub on a Saturday evening shortly after 7pm. It was completely full of rugby fans watching the England vs. Wales game on 3 different screens. As we couldn’t get a seat, we sat down at the bar and ordered a Guinness.
The Irish pub offers plenty of seating options at the bar, at tables of different sizes and even at tables that look like barrels. The carpeted floor creates a warm living room feel and the decorations on the walls almost make you think you’ve really landed in Ireland. As soon as the sports broadcast ended, music was played over the loudspeakers. The selection of music, ranging from 80s to mainstream rock, was particularly popular with Nico.
However, a real highlight of the Irish Pub in the Europa-Center is that live music is played every evening. This was also the case on the evening of our visit. From 8pm, Back Beat Berlin were to provide the musical accompaniment for the evening. It really got going at around 9pm. In addition to the previous area, another area was opened up where the stage was located and the band played. However, the music and atmosphere could also be enjoyed outside this area. As the evening progressed, it turned into a real party atmosphere with dancing couples, a polonaise and everyone singing rock, party hits and German schlager together.
Friendliness
The service is very attentive, even when the place is full they try to process orders as quickly as possible. If the service staff are not quick enough, you can simply get your own drinks directly from the bar.
You always pay directly at the bar and tables are also charged after each order. So be prepared to tip regularly on top of the prices, which are quite high for Berlin.
However, the service staff were all very friendly throughout the evening and when the pub had emptied after the game, also after every almost empty drink at our table.
We found a special situation for an Irish pub in the toilets. An elderly gentleman was sitting here with a small table in front of the ladies’ toilet, which was also used to ask for tips for using the toilets. In our opinion, however, the toilets should definitely be free of charge for pub visitors. Although no tip was requested directly, we did feel guilty … at least a little. The toilets weren’t really that clean, but this was also due to the increased number of visitors on Saturday evening.
Drinks
The drinks selection is pretty standard for an Irish pub. Guinness is on the menu, as it should be, as well as Kilkenny Irish Ale, HopHouse 13 Lager and our favorite Newcastle Brown Ale on tap. However, at €7.90 for a half liter, the drinks prices at the Irish Pub in the Europa-Center are among the highest we have discovered in Berlin.
Our tip: if you order a 1.5-liter pitcher, you can save a few euros. We shared a pitcher of Newcastle Brown Ale.
Unfortunately, the Newcastle Brown Ale was already out by 10pm, otherwise we would have ordered a second pitcher.
There is also a happy hour from Monday to Thursday from 1pm to 7pm, when all 0.5l draught drinks cost just €5.90 instead of €7.90.
Mixed beer drinks, such as Snake-Bite or Poor Man’s Black Velvet, are also on offer here. Christiane particularly wanted to try the Dublin Drop (another name for the Irish Car Bomb). This drink consists of Guinness, which is served half full in a 0.5 l glass and a shot of Baileys and Jameson whisky. The shot is then sunk into the 0.5-liter glass and everything is drunk straight away. We didn’t quite dare to do this and took a little more time to enjoy it.
Nico has had Irish flag fever since the Shamrock Pub in Zehlendorf. As they served a different version with a mixture of peppermint liqueur, Baileys and Grand Marnier, we had to try this one too. The Irish Flag Shot in this Irish pub was served in just one shot glass consisting of several layers, which we liked even better than in the Shamrock Pub. There, the shots came in 3 individual shot glasses.
Conclusion: The Irish Flag Shot was super tasty and also looks really good.
Whisky is also on the menu at the Irish Pub in the Europa-Center. Here you will find a selection of Irish, Scottish and Welsh whiskeys, as well as bourbon.
Food / Snacks
Even before our visit to the pub, we had studied the drinks and food menu of the Irish pub in the Europa-Center carefully. Mainly so that we could assess whether we should have a larger meal beforehand or whether this could be done on the spot. Christiane was really looking forward to trying the Irish stew and arrived at the pub with a correspondingly large appetite. However, we couldn’t find the Irish stew on the menu when we got there. Instead, chili con carne and nachos were new additions to the menu. Unfortunately, the waitress also confirmed that the Irish stew had been removed from the menu. That was a great pity. Because apart from chili con carne, there were no real alternatives.
So we ordered sandwiches. Nico had the Club Sandwich and Christiane ordered the Turkey & Cheese Toasted Sandwich. Both came with an extra load of potato chips. The sandwiches were made with plain sandwich bread and had no special ingredients. However, at €9 for the Club Sandwich and €8 for the Turkey & Cheese Toasted Sandwich, they were simply too expensive.
So don’t be put off by the online menu (as of February 2024). It hasn’t been up to date for a long time. Both in terms of the dishes and the prices.
Update: The Irish Pub in the Europacenter has since completed a website relaunch. Since then, the food and drinks menu has also been updated again.
