The Lir | Tiergarten

The Lir has been an Irish institution in Berlin’s Tiergarten-Mitte district for over 30 years. And for us, it’s one of the best Irish pubs we’ve visited in Berlin so far.

As soon as you enter the pub, you feel like you’ve arrived in Ireland. The interior is more than cozy and was enhanced by the decorations during the Christmas season. It feels like a large living room with a fireplace and wooden tables with candles on them. The pictures on the walls make the whole ambience even cozier. You can forgive the fact that there is no table football or darts.

There are several televisions and projectors for sports broadcasts. During our visit, several Champions League matches were being streamed and soccer fans from the clubs had also gathered there. The Lir generally broadcasts soccer, rugby and Irish sports in full HD on the large screens.

During our visit in the cold Berlin winter, the outdoor area was not open. However, there were tables in front of the restaurant.

There are separate toilets for men and women. The toilets were clean until late in the evening.

Smoking is not permitted in the entire indoor area.

As soon as we had found a seat, we were served directly. We were brought the menu and our order was taken. We started with another typical Guinness while we took some time to take a closer look at the wide range of food on offer. The waiters spoke mostly English and were very friendly. Everything was brought very quickly, so there were never any long waits.

Orders are usually taken directly at the table. You can pay both in cash and by card.

The Irish pub must-have Guinness is available on tap. There is also a House Red Ale on offer, as well as other bottled beers such as Hop House and Berlin craft beer from Brew Dog or the Berliner Berg brewery.

Bottled cider is available from well-known brands such as Magners and Strongbow. The mixed beer drinks are also a special highlight, such as the Poor Mans Black Velvet (Guinness and cider) or Midnight (Guinness and port).

A whisky menu is also available and presents a selection of Irish and Scottish whiskies.

However, we were particularly pleased with the food at The Lir. There was a very extensive selection of classic bar food, such as burgers, sandwiches and onion rings. But also typical Irish dishes, such as the Shepherds Pie, which we had to order straight away. We also try the sandwich with lemon and thyme and a portion of onion rings and are not disappointed in either case. The food is delicious and we recommend anyone with an empty stomach to visit The Lir. It is well worth it. The food is of outstanding quality and the price is absolutely justified.
